One for the record books

I was at the Mariners game Friday night and saw Ichiro match and then pass George Sisler's 84 year old mark for hits in a season (257). In an age where professional athelete make phone calls after scoring touchdowns, Ichiro is a class act. After passing Sisler with his 258th hit of the season, the other Mariners came out and mobbed Ichiro at first base. Even with all the excitement of the moment, he still took the time to walk over to Sisler's relatives in attendance and thank them for being there.

Ichiro's climb into the record books was the only highlight of an extremely disappointing season for the Mariners as they just barely managed to escape a 100 loss season. I was also disappointed with how little the national media covered Ichiro's moment. Right after Ichiro's hit, David called his brother who was watching ESPN at home; he told us that ESPN had not broken away from their regular programming to broadcast Ichiro's at-bat. When I got home I turned on Sportscenter to learn that Ichiro was not the lead story--it was a Bonds-Babe Ruth comparison.
